A Rocawear Story
One of the most commonly used hip hop clothing line that the urban community uses is the rocawear fashion clothing line. The rocawear is an urban clothing line that was founded in 1999 by Damon Dash, Kareem “Biggs” Burke and Jay-Z, which were also the head of the Roc-a-Fella Records, in which the rocawear got its name. Because of the popularity that the rocawear receives from the urban community, the rocawear has an annual sale of over $700 million.

But popularity is not the only thing that the rocawear urban clothing line has to face, like any other famous clothing line, the rocawear also suffered some allegations. On January 17, 2007, allegations were made of raccoon-dog fur being used in two styles of jackets, rocawear pulled all of the garments from the department stores where this product was shipped. A representative of rocawear stated the company was unaware the fur was being used and had notified manufactures it was not permitted. The items, in addition to being pulled from department stores, were also removed from the brands official website.
In March of 2007, Jay-Z sold the rights to the rocawear brand to Iconix Brand Group, a brand management company that licenses brands to retailers and manufacturers primarily in the apparel, footwear, and apparel accessory industries, for $204 million. Jay-Z still retained his stake in the company and will continue to oversee the marketing, licensing and product development.
